Thriven Design was happy to join project developer Pennrose in Atlanta, GA, Thursday, August 27, for the grand opening of Legacy at Herndon Square. Legacy at Herndon Square is the second phase of a five-phase redevelopment of the former Herndon Homes public housing site in West Atlanta. Thriven Design has been involved with the revitalization of the Herndon Homes site since the master planning phase in 2020 and is providing architecture and engineering services for phases II-V.

Legacy at Herndon Square is composed of 30 multifamily market-rate apartments and 170 affordable multifamily apartments set in a context of urban green space and resident amenities. The four-story residence wraps an interior courtyard containing a ¾ acre, multi-level green spacewith walking path, covered patio areas and playground. Interior amenities include a generous lobby with adjacent management suite, community room with kitchenette, resident lounge, wellness clinic, fitness center, computer room and dog wash station. The residence was designed to meet EarthCraft Multifamily and ENERGY STAR Certification. An enclosed parking is deck for residents is immediately adjacent to the building.

Legacy at Herndon Square is flanked by Atlanta’s Science Square to the north, a bio-health and life science campus providing more than 500 jobs to Atlanta residents, with projected job growth potential in upcoming years and The Gathering Spot Atlanta located in the historic North Yards Business Park to the east, this landmark site provides space for professionals, entrepreneurs, music industry executives, filmmakers, and creatives. Georgia World Congress Center, State Farm Arena and Mecedes-Benz Stadium are all within 1-mile of Legacy at Herndon Square.

Phase II of the Herndon Square revitalization, Legacy at Herndon Square, is located next to Phase III, which is currently under construction and slated to add 178 one-, two-, and three-bedroom units to the site, distributed as a mix of 27 market-rate units and 151 affordable Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) units, available to families at 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Thriven Design is also providing A/E services for this phase, which is estimated to be completed in the Spring of 2027.
