Urban Designer/Urban Planner
We are seeking an enthusiastic Urban Designer/Urban Planner with excellent planning, site and urban design skills. This position will give you the chance to shape early design directions for several of our projects and across several regions within the US.
The ideal candidate has a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master’s degree in Urban Design or Urban Planning, along with three plus years of professional experience in this field. AICP licensure is a plus. This position works in collaboration with planners and architects on a range of project types including site plans, capacity studies, master plans, neighborhood plans and community engagement. Project experience should include site research and analysis, site design, planning studies, community planning, urban design, and community involvement. Experience with architectural design, mixed-use and multi-family residential projects is also desirable.
A working knowledge of standard office software programs as well as experience with rendering and visualization tools (such as Revit, Archicad, Adobe Creative Suite, GIS and SketchUp) are required. Excellent verbal and writing skills and strong graphic presentation skills (both free-hand and digital) are essential. Experience with community engagement and public speaking are a plus. Above all, we are looking for a self-motivated, organized, and resourceful individual with the ability to work independently or in a team environment and will be comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously.
Project Manager - Asset Preservation

Your Impact:
We are presently seeking an enthusiastic design professional with excellent technical, written/verbal communication, constructability, construction cost estimating, and project management skills for a Project Manager role focused on Asset Preservation. This aspect of our practice concentrates on the assessment, renovation, repair, and enhancement of existing buildings and sites to prolong their use and viability. Asset Preservation is a powerful tool used to strengthen local economies and stabilize property values. It’s sustainability to the highest “green” degree when compared to demolition and new construction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project and design team management, assessment of building conditions, oversight of the design, documentation, specification, and understanding of major building systems in existing as well as new buildings.
- Plan, schedule and track project timelines and milestones to ensure project is on schedule.
- Conduct project research as applicable for the appropriate scope of work (historical, regulatory, etc.).
- Conduct on-site inspections and building condition assessments, coordinate and assist with energy audits, including GPNA and RAD work.
- Perform accessibility analysis of existing properties. Possess the knowledge of ADA requirements.
- Prepare written reports that accurately describe findings and recommendations.
- Coordinate and respond to requests for changes in project scope.
- Physical fitness to navigate stairs, sites, and building interiors.
- Willingness to travel to project and client locations when necessary (a valid driver’s license is required).
Education and Experience:
- Candidate shall possess at least 12 years of relevant experience, preferably in an architectural firm, and minimum of 5 years of experience conducting building assessments and writing technical reports.
- Candidate for this position should have a background in architecture, engineering, building forensics, interior design, or construction management.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction management, engineering, or similar courses of study preferred. Candidates that do not possess a degree but have solid building and construction knowledge gained through work experience will also be considered.
- Licensure as either a Registered Architect or Professional Engineer is preferred.
Preferred Skills: - Candidates must possess strong skills in team organization and collaboration, design, technical documentation, detailing, code review and interpretation, and consultant coordination.
- Ability to work productively and independently on multiple projects, adhering to client deadlines with guidance from senior firm leaders.
- Analytical thinker with the ability to evaluate existing building conditions, building systems, and information to formulate scope of work.
- The ability to read and understand as-built design drawings as well as to perform field inspections is critical. This includes building envelope details and material functions regarding moisture infiltration.
- Property condition assessments, including technical writing proficiency, understanding of cost estimating for general budget purposes, accessibility, and understanding of various funding agency guidelines, requirements, tools, and processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ongoing communications with multiple clients are an important part of this position.
- Good technical computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and CAD.

- Perform specific project tasks adhering to deadlines and within budget, as directed by a Project Manager.
- Conduct project research as applicable for the appropriate scope of work (historical, regulatory, etc.).
- Data compilation and organization, contributing to written reports and assessment findings.
- Effectively communicate project progress and issues with the project team and management.
- Coordinate various efforts in support of projects from initiation through close-out.
- Understand concepts of building component life cycles, building system condition evaluation, replacement costs, and maintainable/sustainable responses.
- Familiar with the basic principles of architecture, MEP systems, structural systems, civil engineering including design, construction, maintenance, accessibility, building codes, and sustainability.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, and willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities:
- Oversight and guidance throughout the project lifecycle including design concept, project requirements, drawing and specification development, and construction administration
- Manage client and team (internal and external) coordination and communication
- Provide advanced working knowledge of other disciplines for guidance in building detailing, building science, envelope, and building systems
- Provide review and revisions to renderings, animations, and construction documents

The Mechanical (HVAC) Engineering Department Manager is vital to the success of Thriven Design. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of ten years of experience designing systems for commercial, educational, healthcare, and multifamily buildings. The candidate should be seasoned and capable as an engineering project manager, capable of designing and engineering a project from initial concept through completed construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate system concepts and options to determine best design and engineering solution for each project based upon project scope
- Develop design drawings and specifications for building mechanical systems
- Perform systems analysis and prepare reports and studies as well as cost estimates
- Lead and coordinate with architects, engineers, designers, and administration staff
- Interface with clients to discuss changes to designs and/or specifications
- Work with leadership to manage design manpower budget and update budget to reflect revisions or changes in scope
- Represent the company in a professional manner in all dealings with owners, architects, vendors, other design professionals and contractors
- Assist in the firm’s human resource efforts through training and mentoring junior firm members
- Work closely with marketing, leadership, and business development
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education And Experience
- Education: B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
- Experience: 10 years of job-related experience
- Licensure/Certification: Professional Engineering License in NJ & PA (at least one is required, with ability to obtain the other). LEED accreditation is desirable, but not a requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project management experience is required (including interfacing with client, coworkers, and code officials)
- Proven track record of success in managing multiple projects simultaneously

Senior Electrical Engineer
We are seeking a senior electrical engineer with a minimum of ten years experience in finding practical solutions when designing systems from concept through construction completion for commercial, multi-family, educational, healthcare; new and retrofit projects.
The Requirements —
- Degree in Architectural Engineering or Electrical Engineering
- PE License is desirable but not required
- “Hands on” design experience with various types of electrical systems
- Strong relational and communication skills with client, business and coworkers
- Proven track record of success managing multiple projects simultaneously

- Work independently to develop the HVAC design from conceptual design through construction documentation phase based on project scope
- Perform field surveys to develop scope and assess existing conditions
- Perform engineering calculations
- Analyze and apply applicable construction codes
- Coordinate design with other trades (Architectural, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection)
- Provide construction observation services
- Prepare HVAC project specifications independently from a company master specification
- Participate and collaborate in project team setting and engage in creative and critical thought
Education And Experience
- Education: B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
- Experience: 5 years of job-related experience
