Redeemer Village
Located across the street from Holy Redeemer Hospital on Huntingdon Pike, Redeemer Village is an independent living community providing affordable housing for active adults age 62+. Originally constructed in the early 1980s, the community was in need of major improvements and Thriven Design was brought aboard to effectively remediate the problems with the site and structure and bring it up to modern-day standards.
Improvements were made to three residential wings of three- and four-stories with a total of 201 units. Improvements included bathroom and kitchen renovations, flooring and window replacements, heating and air conditioning improvements, construction of a new elevator to achieve vertical transportation redundancy in all wings, and renovation of interior and exterior common areas.
The Redeemer Village project combined a comprehensive building renovation with installation of a high-capacity ground-mounted solar array. The 1,173.6 kW DC / 840 kW AC PV system, developed by Energy Systems Group in conjunction with Thriven Design, includes 2,934 high-efficiency modules (400 W each), 14 Chint Power Systems inverters, a custom-engineered ground-mount racking system, and secure perimeter fencing. The system’s output is projected to fully offset annual electricity use, placing the property on track for net zero energy performance. In high-production months, generation may exceed on-site consumption, creating a net positive energy profile.
Based on regional grid emissions factors, the system avoids an estimated 1,518 metric tons of CO₂ annually—equivalent to removing over 323 passenger cars from the road. These carbon savings amplify the economic and social benefits for residents, many of whom are on fixed incomes.
The Redeemer Village project exemplifies sustainable new development and major renovation by integrating on-site renewable energy, measurable efficiency gains, and resilient infrastructure into affordable housing. It directly advances Green Building United’s mission by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering utility burdens for vulnerable populations, and modeling a replicable, data-driven approach to community-scale sustainability.
