Happy Retirement to Thriven Design Principal Eugene ‘Geno’ Schiavo
Thriven Design would like to extend heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to Principal Eugene ‘Geno’ Schiavo, AIA, PP, LEED®AP, as we announce his retirement, which will begin June 1, 2024.
Geno has spent the last 40 years of his professional career with Thriven Design, and we could not be more appreciative of the ways in which he has fundamentally shaped our firm and its studios into the dynamic, interdisciplinary workplace that it is today.
“It’s a rare thing in any profession to work with someone for four decades”, reflected Thriven Principal Steve Schoch, who also joined the firm in 1984. “In the early years I benefitted from his experience and understanding of construction, and then as colleagues sharing in the leadership of the firm we were able to grow and expand the practice into one of the foremost multifamily design firms in the MidAtlantic region. It’s a very special calling to spend your career creating physical spaces that impact the everyday lives of so many people – and that is where Geno’s legacy of design will be measured in its fullest.”

Geno is a graduate of Catholic University where he pursued a Master’s in Architecture with a focus on Energy, Solar, and Sustainability. His passion for sustainable design led him to a professional emphasis on the renovation, adaptive reuse and preservation of existing buildings — one of the “greenest” of options for building owners when compared with new construction.
Geno built Thriven Design’s Asset Preservation studio during his long tenure at the firm, and he has worked tirelessly to ensure that its commitment to building communities will endure under the new leadership of Alkeshkumar (Alkesh) Taylor, PE, LEED® AP, Principal, Director of Asset Preservation, Director of Engineering.
“Geno is truly an exceptional leader who has contributed greatly to the success of this firm,” said Taylor. “His commitment to his clients and mentorship of the asset preservation studio has been exemplary over the past 40 years. I have had the pleasure of working with him on several projects over the last 15 years and have witnessed firsthand his unwavering dedication to guiding and leading the asset preservation studio. A true “people person”, Geno is known for his deep connection to clients and colleagues, and his emphasis on making time for “what truly matters.” He speaks often of Thriven Design as a family, and it will be admittedly difficult to imagine the firm without one of our favorite “relatives.”
