Redeemer Village honored as Green Building United Groundbreaker Award finalist
Thriven Design is happy to congratulate Redeemer Health and Redeemer Ministries on the selection of Redeemer Village as a runner up in the 2025 Green Building United Groundbreaker Awards. Redeemer Village was recognized for its advancements in Sustainable Building Operations, made possible as a result of comprehensive efficiency upgrades and the integration of a high-capacity solar PV system optimized to match post-renovation electricity demand for both tenant units and common areas. The project demonstrates how strategic operational improvements can deliver measurable environmental, economic, and community benefits for affordable senior housing.Congratulations to Energy Systems Group, Michael A. Beach and Associates, VDA, Boles Smyth Associates, Domus Construction, and the entire project team.
The 1,173.6 kW DC / 840 kW AC PV system, developed by Energy Systems Group in conjunction with Thriven Design, includes 2,934 high-efficiency modules (400 W each), 14 Chint Power Systems inverters, a custom-engineered ground-mount racking system, and secure perimeter fencing. Modeled production was approximately 1.4 million kWh annually, based on PVsyst and eQUEST simulations, with energy outputs matched to the site’s post-renovation demand. The system connects with PECO’s grid via a dedicated transformer and underground distribution lines.
Renovation scope extended beyond renewable generation to include deep energy efficiency measures. Lighting upgrades reduced loads to 0.213 W/sq. ft. in units and 0.50 W/sq. ft. in common areas. HVAC, domestic hot water, and refrigeration equipment were selected for Energy Star performance, while low-flow plumbing fixtures were installed to achieve significant water conservation.
The Redeemer Village project exemplifies sustainable new development and major renovation by integrating on-site renewable energy, measurable efficiency gains, and resilient infrastructure into affordable housing.
