Millard Terrell Homes
Working with the Newark Housing Authority, Thriven Design led a community driven process to reimagine Terrell Homes, a 275-unit public housing community located along Newark’s revitalizing Passaic River. Through a series of workshop meetings with residents, local civic groups and the City of Newark, Thriven Design developed a multi-phase, mixed-use redevelopment vision for the site. The plan proposes a village of mid-rise apartment buildings and town-house style units forming a new green and walkable community connecting the new Riverfront Park to the Ironbound’s residential core. In developing the vision plan, Thriven Design listened to the needs of the residents, addressed the goals and objectives of the Housing Authority and considered funding opportunities to create a feasible plan that is consistent with the City of Newark’s waterfront development objectives and sensitive to the needs of longtime residents. The plan serves as a roadmap to the redevelopment of a safe, attractive, and equitable community.
Phase I of the plan is under construction, consisting of a 69-unit mixed-use community with a range of affordable one- and two-bedroom units age-restricted for senior residents. Below the four stories of apartments is an entire floor reserved for a lobby, management office, supportive services center, and utility room. The development of the first phase received financial support from the state with an award of NJEDA Aspire tax credits.
